Oxford is an important and popular tourist city which also retains its modern, working charm. Oxford offers something for everyone, and as such it can be difficult to know where to start when you are visiting the city for the first time. Whether you have a few days or a few weeks, there are some Oxford attractions you just cannot miss.
1. Oxford University
For most first-time visitors to Oxford, the city means the university. This is one of the main attractions for numerous people who are visiting this historic city for the first time. The historic, atmospheric college buildings are certainly unique, and you can’t miss touring at least one or two. The best thing about visiting the college buildings in Oxford is that every single one is unique. Their character makes visiting these places a rewarding experience. If you only have time to visit one college, make it Christ Church College. This is a gorgeous country house-style place where scenes from Harry Potter were filmed. The cathedral is also an impressive sight.
2. Favourite Museums
Oxford has some excellent museums which make a good place to start when you are beginning your Oxford city tour. For example, the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology is a splendid place full of artistic treasures, and the University Museum with the Pitt Rivers Museum within it, is not to be missed – this museum holds a carried collection of weird and wonderful items from across the globe.
3. Radcliffe Square
Look around this cobbled square which lies at the heart of Oxford University, and is flanked by a number of impressive buildings including the Bodleian Library, and St Mary’s Church. If you climb to the top of the spire you get an impressive view over the college.
4. Botanic Gardens
You’ll find the oldest botanic garden in the UK just off the High Street in Oxford, and this is a peaceful place to get away from the bustle of the city. The formal gardens are full of well-tended plants including plants for traditional herbal remedies.
5. Guided Walks
To see Oxford best, investigate it on foot. There are a number of different tours to choose from, including Inspector Morse tours, film locations, and pub walks.
